CT Scans
What is a CT Scan?
CT Scans (CAT Scans) are imaging systems that captures pictures of internal structures, like your organs, that cannot be seen using x-rays.
CT scans are commonly used when you have an internal injury or issue that cannot be seen with conventional X-rays, such as muscle disorders, tumors, internal injuries, or blood clots. CT scans are also helpful in guiding procedures such as exploratory surgeries or biopsies.
Because the monitor is small and portable, it can be worn during normal daily activities, which can help your doctor correlate your heart activity with symptoms such as dizziness or palpitations.

Quick & Easy Preparation
A CT Scan is a fast and painless procedure that is more likely to detect serious health issues, such as lung tumors, than a routine chest X-ray.
How CT Scans works
You will simply lie on a motorized table that moves you through the opening of the scanner, where the device rotates around you as it collects images. You may hear buzzing noises, but there will be a technician in a separate room who can see you and communicate with you via intercom.
After the scan, you can return to your normal day. You may be asked to wait for a few minutes to make sure you are feeling well. If you received an injection of contrast material, your doctor or the technician may recommend that you drink lots of water to help your body flush out the contrast material.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I prepare for a CT scan?
Depending on which part of your body is being scanned, you may be asked to:
- Take off some or all of your clothing and wear a hospital gown
- Remove metal objects, such as a belt, jewelry, dentures, and eyeglasses, which might interfere with image results
- Refrain from eating or drinking for a few hours before your scan
On some occasions, a special dye called “contrast material” is necessary to help highlight the parts of your body being scanned by allowing them to show up in a different color on the final images. Contrast material may be given to you by mouth or injection. While this process can be uncomfortable, it is not normally painful and it is minimally invasive. If you are asked to take the oral contrast material, start drinking the oral contrast two hours before your appointment time (1st dose – two hours prior to appointment; 2nd dose- one hour prior to appointment).
How soon will I know the results?
Scans are available immediately but your doctor will schedule a follow-up appointment to discuss the results with you.
