Hypogonadism
What is Hypogonadism?
Hypogonadism is the reduction or absence of hormone secretion or other physiological activity of the gonads
Hypogonadism is when the male body does not produce enough testosterone (the primary male sex hormone that is essential in masculine growth and development during puberty).
Men can be born with the condition or develop it during puberty or adulthood, which is often times due to injury or infection.

There are two types of Hypogonadism: Primary and Secondary
Primary is when there is a problem with the testicles. The secondary is when the hypothalamus, or pituitary gland, fails to send signals to the testicles so that they can produce testosterone. Both types may be an inherited trait, acquired later in life, and, at times, can occur together.
Complications
The effects vary depending on the time of diagnosis, but physically, males will experience infertility, osteoporosis, lack of muscle mass, development of breast tissue, underdeveloped genitals, and delayed puberty, to name a few. Men may experience symptoms of menopause, which may include fatigue, difficulty concentrating, decreased sex drive, and hot flashes.
Management
Treatment is specific to the cause. For adults and boys, there is TRT (Testosterone Replacement Therapy) and assisted reproduction (for adults). TRT may consist of injections, Androderm patch, a topical or nasal gel, buccal cavity strain, or implantable pellets. Coping with the condition may seem complicated, but support from our Aylo Health providers throughout the diagnosis and treatment are available.
