COVID-19 PCR Test
What is a COVID-19 PCR test?
A molecular test, approved by the FDA, that looks for an active infection in currently sick patients.
The COVID-19 PCR test is the most accurate and reliable test available for detecting and diagnosing SARS-CoV-2, which is why it is considered the “gold standard” for testing. Samples are collected from the respiratory system (nasal swab) to verify whether the infection is in fact present. The sample is taken using a swab, which resembles a long Q-Tip, to collect virus material found in your nose and may cause mild discomfort for 5 to 10 seconds. This viral test is recommended to diagnose both symptomatic and asymptomatic patients.
Wearing a mask when sick may limit exposure to others and help prevent infected people from spreading COVID-19. Social distancing and washing your hands may also help decrease the transmission of COVID-19.

Available Tests
Our healthcare professionals and staff work hard to ensure anyone who is in need of a test can get one, however, COVID-19 PCR tests are reserved only for those showing current symptoms and if the provider deems it necessary. These patients may include those at high risk of major complications with the most immediate need, patients who have current signs and symptoms, or those who have been directly exposed to someone who tested positive within the last two weeks. Testing is not recommended if patients are not showing symptoms of the virus.
Treatment Options
Since every person’s symptoms may vary from patient to patient, treatment is based on each individual’s symptoms and current chronic medical conditions. So, your Aylo Health provider will determine which treatment option is best for you. If you are experiencing any of the symptoms listed above, or if you have tested positive and symptoms are worsening, please contact our office to schedule an appointment with your Aylo Health provider.
Signs & Symptoms
Patients with COVID-19 have experienced a wide range of symptoms, ranging from mild to severe illnesses – similar to the common cold and the flu. Since the flu (influenza) and COVID-19 are both respiratory illnesses with similar symptoms, it may be difficult to determine the difference between the two – requiring a PCR test to confirm a diagnosis. These symptoms can appear anywhere from 2 to 14 days after being directly exposed to someone with the virus. According to the CDC, these symptoms can include:
- Fever or chills
- Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
- Chest pressure or pain
- Congestion or runny nose
- Sore throat
- Muscle or body aches
- Fatigue
- New loss of taste or smell
- Diarrhea
- Nausea or vomiting
- Headache

What does a positive PCR test mean?
If you test positive for COVID-19, that means it is very likely that you have an active infection of the virus. Most people with an active infection experience mild to severe symptoms and can typically recover at home without any special medical care. However, if symptoms start to progress, you should contact your Aylo provider immediately to discuss any questions or concerns. After testing positive, it’s important you follow up with your provider about any precautions and medications that may be necessary, separate yourself from others, and stay home for 10 to 14 days.
What should I do if I test positive for COVID-19?
If you test positive for COVID-19 and are actively contagious, you should self-quarantine for at least 10 days. Once you can go 72 hours without any symptoms, you are most likely no longer contagious.
What does a negative PCR test mean?
If you test negative for COVID-19, that means you probably did not have an active infection at the time you took your test. However, it is possible to be infected with the virus but not have enough fragments in your body to be detected by the test. This is possible if you have recently become infected but are not showing symptoms yet or if you have had COVID-19 for more than a week before being tested and were not aware.
