Cardiac Stress Test
What is a Cardiac Stress Test?
A cardiological test that shows how well your heart functions during physical activity.
When your body is active, it requires more oxygen than when it is at rest, and, therefore, your heart has to pump more blood.
Because of the increased stress on the heart, exercise can often reveal cardiac problems that may not be apparent when the body is at rest. This is why cardiac stress monitoring is one of the most trusted initial, non-invasive tests.

How it works
Electrodes are attached to specific areas of a patient’s chest, using special adhesive patches with a special gel that conducts electrical impulses, which allow the electrodes to record heart activity. A technician runs resting tests so they can be compared with results from the actual tests. The patient begins riding a stationary bicycle or walking on a treadmill, while the intensity of exercise is gradually increased.
The patient continues exercising at increasing intensity until he or she reaches his or her target heart rate or experiences severe fatigue, dizziness or chest pain. During this time, the patient’s heart rate, breathing, electrocardiogram, blood pressure and feeling of well-being are closely and continually monitored.
Understanding Results
A normal result of an exercise stress test shows a heart rate and blood pressure within the normal range and no unusual dizziness or shortness of breath.
A number of abnormalities may show up on an exercise stress test, however, such as high blood pressure, abnormal heart rhythm, or structural abnormalities of the heart; all of which will lead to further assessment from your doctor. Preliminary results are available following your test, and your doctor will schedule a follow-up to discuss the official results.
