Metabolic Syndrome

A cluster of conditions that increase the risk of heart disease and diabetes.

Metabolic Syndrome (Syndrome X) is a cluster of conditions that populate in one individual. The cluster usually is comprised of insulin resistance, hypertension, cholesterol anomalies, and an increased risk for blood clotting. Those who are affected are often overweight or obese. Syndrome X leads to cardiovascular disease as well as type 2 diabetes. Genetics and environment are prime contributing factors in the development of metabolic syndrome. Other factors include smoking, excessive consumption of [high] carbohydrates, sedentary lifestyle, and post-menopause.

The host of conditions usually result in cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes.

Treating the cause(s) of Syndrome X to cease the development of both type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease is essential. As mentioned, those who are typically overweight and do not engage in an active lifestyle suffer from this condition. An aggressive alteration in lifestyle is preferred–this includes better nutrition/diet and exercise.
