What Is a Low-Dose CT Scan?
A low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) scan is a special type of X-ray that takes detailed images of your lungs using a lower amount of radiation than a traditional CT scan. It’s quick, non-invasive, and the most effective screening method for detecting lung cancer in its earliest and most treatable stages.
Who Should Get Screened?
You may be eligible for a low-dose CT scan if you meet the following criteria:
- You’re between the ages of 50 and 80
- You are a current smoker or former smoker who quit within the past 15 years
- You have a 20+ pack-year smoking history (that’s one pack a day for 20 years, or two packs a day for 10 years)
Why Early Detection Matters
Most lung cancers don’t cause noticeable symptoms until they’ve reached an advanced stage. By then, treatment options may be limited. But with regular screening, we can detect lung cancer before it spreads, when it’s most treatable.
Studies show that LDCT screening can reduce lung cancer deaths by up to 20% in high-risk individuals.
