Lunar New Year: Health Tips and Traditions From Aylo Health Providers
Lunar New Year is a time for celebration, reflection, and welcoming new beginnings. For many families, it’s one of the most important holidays of the year, filled with traditions that honor health, prosperity, and togetherness.
To help our patients celebrate mindfully, we sat down with two of our Aylo Health providers, Jia Son, FNP-BC, and Trang Nguyen, FNP-C, who shared personal traditions, favorite foods, and simple ways to stay healthy during the festivities.
Whether you’re ringing in the Year of the Horse, gathering with family, or enjoying once-a-year dishes you love, here are their insights to help you stay well through the holiday.
Trang said, “we all gather together and we have a good time. We’re going to have great food together.”
Our providers share how they stay healthy during Lunar New Year.
Traditional Foods That Support a Healthy New Year
Food plays a central role in Lunar New Year celebrations. Many dishes symbolize luck, longevity, and prosperity, and our providers emphasized the joy and connection that come from sharing these meals. We of course want everyone to enjoy these foods without guilt, just keep moderation in mind, especially if you’re managing chronic conditions.
Son said, “make sure you eat healthy — balance your diet. Doesn’t matter how good the food is, please balance your diet.”
Healthy Ways to Celebrate Lunar New Year
Our providers offered simple, practical wellness reminders to help keep the holiday enjoyable and safe.
1. Stay Active
With several days of food-focused gatherings, even light movement, like a walk with family, can help support digestion and energy levels.
2. Be Mindful of Sugar and Sodium
Many traditional dishes are delicious but can be high in sweetness or salt. Enjoy them, but be aware of how much you’re having, especially if you have:
- Diabetes
- Hypertension
- Heart conditions
3. Keep Up With Your Routine Medications
Celebrations can get busy. Our providers recommend preparing medications ahead of time if you’re traveling or attending multiple gatherings.
4. Prioritize Rest and Stress Relief
A new year is a natural time to reflect, but it can also bring pressure. Don’t forget to:
- Take time for yourself
- Relax between events
- Practice deep breathing or light stretching
5. Schedule Your Yearly Checkup
Many cultures believe that starting the new year with good health sets the tone for months to come. A preventive care visit is a great way to honor that tradition.
