October Is Health Literacy Month. Let’s Break Down a Few Confusing Health Terms
October 2 • 2025

At Aylo Health, we believe that understanding your health is one of the most important steps toward taking control of it. That’s why we’re using Health Literacy Month to clear up a few medical terms that often confuse even the most well-informed patients.
Because let’s face it healthcare jargon can feel like a different language. Once you understand the basics, it becomes much easier to make informed decisions about your care.
Deductible vs. Copay
Let’s start with a pair of terms that show up in just about every health insurance plan: deductible and copay.
- Deductible: This is the amount you have to pay out of pocket before your insurance starts covering services. For example, if your deductible is $1,500, you’ll pay for the first $1,500 of covered care yourself. After that, your insurance helps with the cost.
- Copay: A copay is a fixed fee you pay at the time of service. This might be $20 for a primary care visit or $50 for a specialist. Copays typically apply after you’ve met your deductible, but some plans have them regardless.
In short
Deductible = what you pay first before insurance helps
Copay = flat fee you pay each visit
Cholesterol Levels: HDL vs. LDL
If you’ve ever had a cholesterol screening, you’ve likely heard your provider talk about HDL and LDL. But what’s the difference?
- HDL (High-Density Lipoprotein): Often called the “good” cholesterol, HDL helps remove bad cholesterol from your bloodstream. Higher HDL levels are associated with a lower risk of heart disease.
- LDL (Low-Density Lipoprotein): This is the “bad” cholesterol. High levels of LDL can build up in your arteries and increase your risk of heart attack and stroke.
In short
HDL = good, we want this number high
LDL = bad, we want this number low
Preventive vs. Diagnostic Visits
This one’s especially important when it comes to how your insurance gets billed.
- Preventive Visit: This is your routine checkup when you’re feeling well. It includes screenings, vaccines, and conversations about how to stay healthy. Most insurance plans cover preventive care at no cost to you.
- Diagnostic Visit: This happens when you’re not feeling well or you have a new concern. For example, if you book an appointment because you’re experiencing fatigue or pain, that’s diagnostic.
In short
Preventive = regular checkup to stay ahead of problems
Diagnostic = visit to evaluate symptoms or new issues
