Build good habits for the health of you and your family

People who have a higher risk factor for heart disease need to be aware of their heart health and how to keep themselves healthy. But it’s also important for people of all ages to be aware of their heart health and how to stay healthy long-term. We believe an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

We believe it’s important for you and your loved ones to be aware of the most effective methods to maintain a healthy heart. The activities we will discuss below are suitable for people of all ages, including seniors. Encourage your entire family, from children to parents, grandparents, and even beyond, to participate in these heart-healthy endeavors.

Creating a habit is easier when your whole household is participating in it too. It’s also a great way to teach the children around you how to build healthy habits long term.

Nutrition:

What you eat is an integral part of taking care of your heart, as it influences several different aspects of your heart health like helping manage blood pressure, inflammation, cholesterol levels, and triglycerides.

Foods that your family should be eating:

  • Leafy Greens (such as spinach and kale)
  • Fruits (apples and berries)
  • Whole grains (such as brown rice, oatmeal, or whole-grain bread)
  • Protein-rich foods (beans, fish, and lean meats)

Here’s another helpful dietary suggestion: reduce your sodium intake. Many everyday food items contain high levels of salt, so it’s essential to check food labels and opt for low-sodium alternatives whenever possible.

Exercise:

Exercise is vital for a healthy lifestyle, benefiting people of all ages. It’s the most effective way to strengthen the heart and helps your overall well-being. It’s important to stay active at any age, and luckily, there are many enjoyable exercises for the whole family.

Exercise is also a great way to spend time with your loved ones. Life can get busy, but having a set time for your family to do something is a great way to make sure you’re building time together.

Exercises that the whole family can do together:

  • Walking outside
  • Playing Tennis
  • Water Aerobics
  • Yoga
  • Tai Chi

Sleep:

Did you know that a study found that people who got less than six hours of sleep per night had a 20 percent higher chance of having a heart attack?

Getting the recommended amount of sleep helps you long-term and is a vital part of maintaining your heart health.
