3 Common Diabetes Myths Busted
November 3 • 2025
It’s National Diabetes Education Week and we’re here to set the record straight.
Diabetes affects over 38 million Americans, but misinformation is still everywhere. At Aylo Health, we believe education is a key part of preventive care. So let’s bust a few of the most common myths about diabetes, and give you the facts you need to stay healthy.
In the video below, Dr. Jacobs busts some diabetes myths for National Diabetes Education Week.
Myth 1: Only overweight people get diabetes.
Busted: While excess weight can increase the risk of developing type 2 diabetes, it’s far from the only factor. Genetics, age, ethnicity, activity level, and even certain medical conditions can all play a role. In fact, many people at a healthy weight have diabetes, and some people with obesity never develop it. Type 1 diabetes, which is an autoimmune condition, is not related to weight at all.
Myth 2: People with diabetes can’t eat fruit.
Busted: Fruit contains natural sugar, but that doesn’t mean it’s off-limits. People with diabetes can and should enjoy fruits as part of a balanced diet. The key is choosing whole fruits, watching portion sizes, and pairing fruit with protein or healthy fat to help stabilize blood sugar. Think: an apple with almond butter or berries with Greek yogurt.
Myth 3: Eating sugar causes diabetes.
Busted: This one’s a bit more complicated. Eating too much added sugar can contribute to weight gain and insulin resistance, which increases the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. But sugar itself doesn’t directly cause diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune condition not caused by diet, and type 2 involves a combination of factors, including genetics and lifestyle. Bottom line is moderation matters.
