Grave’s Hyperthyroidism

Grave’s is an immune disorder of the butterfly-shaped gland in the throat (thyroid).

Hyperthyroidism is when antibodies called thyrotropin receptor antibodies, (TRAb) or thyroid stimulating immunoglobulins (TSI) work overtime. These antibodies bind to receptors on the surface of thyroid cells. They then stimulate those cells, causing them to overproduce and secrete thyroid hormones, resulting in the overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism).

Hyperthyroidism can lead to heart trouble, brittle bones, eye problems, skin issues, and Thyrotoxic crisis. These complications can undoubtedly be avoided or reversed once managed.

There are several treatments available for hyperthyroidism–it all depends on age, physical condition, the cause of hyperthyroidism, and the severity. At Aylo Health, our treatments include radioactive iodine, anti-thyroid medications, beta blockers, and surgery (thyroidectomy).

Your doctor will remove a tiny bit of your thyroid or nodule (lump) to test in a lab. This procedure will either lead to “watchful waiting” (if benign) or surgery (if cancerous).
