Hypoparathyroidism
What is Hypoparathyroidism?
Hypoparathyroidism is when the parathyroid does not produce an adequate amount of parathyroid hormone.
Hypoparathyroidism (a rare condition) is the state of decreased secretion or activity of parathyroid hormone (PTH). This condition is a result of a combination of symptoms, but most commonly occurs due to the removal or damage of the parathyroid glands.
When the hormone’s secretion or activity is low, this leads to decreased blood levels of calcium (hypocalcemia), and increasing levels of blood phosphorus. There are two types of hypoparathyroidism: deficient parathyroid hormone secretion and an inability of the kidneys and bones to respond to PTH.

Symptoms of Hypoparathyroidism
- Tingling in fingers, toes or lips
- Anxiety or depression
- Heart failure
- Seizures
- Irregular heartbeat
- Low blood pressure
- Muscle cramps or spasms in legs, feet, lower back or face
Complications
If diagnosed early, complications may include cramp-like spasms, malformed teeth, irregular heartbeat, or paresthesia. These complications are reversible; however, if not diagnosed early, irreversible damage may include cataracts, calcium deposits in the brain, stunted growth and slow mental development in children.
