Polycystic Ovary Syndrome

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) happens when a woman’s ovaries or adrenal glands produce more male hormones than normal.

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome is an imbalance found in the reproductive hormones in women. Hormonal imbalances and metabolic issues can arise from PCOS and can affect the overall health and appearance. In PCOS, ovaries face the most challenges. Eggs may not develop correctly or release during ovulation. The risk of PCOS is higher if women are obese or through genetics. High levels of androgens (male hormones) or insulin are also contributing factors.

PCOS can cause missed or irregular menstrual cycles. An irregularity in the cycle may lead to infertility or the development of cysts. Externally, women may develop hirsutism (too much facial hair or parts of the body where men usually have hair), acne, thinning hair (male-pattern baldness), weight gain, darkening of the skin, or skin tags (excess flaps of skin in the armpits or neck area).

Though there is no cure, a treatment plan can be created between you and your Aylo Health doctor. Lifestyle changes that include diet and/or weight loss, as well as a composite of processes may be implemented. Hair removal methods or hormone altering medications (like birth control) are also available.
